About Steven Eskay
Steven Eskay is an educational professional and Principal living in Silver Spring, Maryland. He has over a decade of experience in education and a passion for progressive educational reforms. As an educational professional, it is no surprise to hear that Steven Eskay’s professional path began with a focus on his education. Steven started with a degree in English (BA) from The College of William and Mary. A few years later, Steven Eskay decided to earn his Juris Doctorate in Law (JD) from UDC, David A. Clarke School of Law. Two years later, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Master’s in Education from American University.
Steven Eskay’s first educational position was as an Educational Consultant and Advocate. He picked up the role in 2011 and held it until 2019. In this role, Steven was contracted for educational testing, consultation, and advocacy services for students (ages 5-12). Notably, Steven held this position alongside several others. In 2009, Steven Eskay became a Part-Time Teacher for Model Learning Center (MCPS). His subjects included English, History, and NSL Government. Following this role, Steven signed on to be a Part-Time Co-Teacher for Special Education. This role eventually led to Steven becoming a Special Education Teacher. He held this title from 2013 to 2019. During this time, he increased student baseline data and PARCC data for students with IEP from zero percent passage in Math to forty percent.
In 2019, Steven Eskay became the Manager of Specialized Instruction for DC Public Schools. He worked hard to improve the schoolwide practices for data-driven and research-based small-group instruction. Furthermore, this role helped onboard Steven to his current professional trajectory. Steven’s next role was as an Assistant Principal, again for DC Public Schools. He held this position for two years, designing and implementing a Whole-Child Multi-Tiered System of Support for intervention services. He also helped to develop a Summer Academy, After School Acceleration Academy, and Saturday Arts Academy.
Currently, Steven Eskay serves as the Principal for DC Public Schools. This is a position for him, and he is excited about the challenges it will bring. Steven’s role requires him to oversee the day-to-day instructional and operational priorities of DCPS Elementary School. The school consists of over four hundred students and sixty staff members. Thus far, one of Steven’s biggest successes has been improving the overall reading proficiency rate to 87%. That is a historic high for the grade level. Likewise, Steven founded the “Innovation Lab” as a district model for STEM education and enrichment. All of these changes helped to increase enrollment to a five-year high.
Steven Eskay has always been fascinated by art and soccer. More specifically, he’s been fascinated by how they enable creativity, community, and collaboration. He believes that these activities can help to develop the next generation of citizens, encouraging them to be well-rounded, knowledgeable, and capable of expressing themselves.
